Language tidbits

Laurel is 20 months old today! Here are some things she says.

- - - - -

She is working on her three-word phrases:

  • Dog in bed
  • Stinky feet bath
  • Baby all done
  • Sippy cup please; on floor
  • Out door please; open

- - - - -

Here's a conversation we had today in the parking lot after we dropped Isaac at school. Laurel likes to identify the vehicles as we walk along.

Laurel: Car. Truck. Pickup truck.

Mama: That's actually a van.

Laurel: Ban.

Mama: And whose car is that?

Laurel: Mama's car. [three second pause] Ours!

- - - - -

She is also adding verbs to her vocabulary. For some reason, most of them take the -ing form:

  • barking

  • climb

  • dancing

  • flying

  • hug

  • kick

  • kissing / kiss

  • pooping

  • rocking
  • shopping

  • sleeping

  • swimming

  • tickle

- - - - -

I wrote this list of opposites dates last month, so there are more by now!

  • all done / more
  • here [handing over an item] / back [requesting an item]
  • up / down
  • on / off
  • closed / open
  • hot / warm / cold

- - - - -

One of her favorite sources of humor is separation from me. Over and over she says, "Bye-bye Mama. Bye-bye Mama." Then she laughs uproariously. Sometimes she says it when she's about to leave the room, pausing just on the threshold -- especially if she's about to go through an open baby gate to somewhere she's not supposed to go.

Sometimes she adds, "Bye-bye Laurel," but I think that's supposed to be my line and she's prompting me to say it.

It seems like she enjoys the tension (and resolution) of the situation, asking herself those deep childhood questions: Can I be without my mother; am I safe? Can I be the one who leaves her behind; am I independent? Will she follow me; am I loved?

But I'm not the only parent she thinks about. One day recently she said, "Mama here. Dad work."
