Three stories about getting stuff

(1) Alarm clock

Well, despite its early promise, the amazing alarm clock I got for Isaac doesn't seem to have permanently cured his nightly exodus to my bed. For the last four nights, he has come into the master bed in the middle of the night.

"Better parenting through products" doesn't seem to have materialized in this case after all. Although it is still an excellent night-light!

(2) Pants

Back in May I went to the second-hand store and bought Laurel several pairs of jeans in size 18 months; she would be turning 18 months old in July, so it seemed like good timing. But she's 20 months old now, and the jeans are still way too big. Recently I got tired of waiting for her to grow, so I took her to the store to buy some more pants.

She ended up fitting into size 12 months.*

Well, perhaps they are a bit too short, but they hang low because the waist is a bit too large, so it works out.

(3) Garbage

Suppose your five-year-old son told you there was a big pile of toys behind his preschool that they were planning to throw away, and he wanted to look through it to see if there was anything good. After taking a quick glance at the pile and talking to the school's director, you determine that your son was correct.

So what do you say to your son?

a) "We are not going to rummage through a pile of garbage."
b) "We do not need any more stuff."
c) "Let's go home and clear out the back of the station wagon, then come back!"

Oh, that is an easy one! We rummaged through a pile of garbage even though we didn't need any more stuff! We got a little kid climbing structure with a slide, a rocking horse, a bunch of dollhouse furniture, some books, and a garbage bag full of wooden puzzles. We basically filled the back of the station wagon with stuff.

Some of it may eventually go to charity (or Craiglist), but at least we had a fun time getting it.

* This is not a story unique to Laurel! When Isaac was 20 months old, he had a pair of 12-month jeans that he couldn't seem to outgrow.
