Having a baby

"I like having a baby!" Isaac said happily this afternoon.

"Oh, yes? What do you like best about it?" I said. I figured he'd tell me something nice about being a big brother or having a sister.

"I liked sleeping with Opa and Oma," he said. "Although I didn't sleep! I talked all night! And I kept Opa and Oma awake!"

Ah. He meant "having a baby" as in giving birth to a baby, not having a baby in the family.

During most of my labor with Laurel, Isaac was asleep in his own bed in the next room. He woke up slightly before she was born (it might have been rather noisy!) at 3:40 a.m., and he met her 40 minutes later. For about an hour and a half we reveled in our new family member, had snacks, and cleaned up a bit.

Then around 6:00 a.m. we all went back to bed. Craig and I snuggled up with tiny new Laurel in our bed, while Isaac went off to the guest room with my parents. He was much too excited to sleep, however, and, as he said, kept my father awake by talking until dawn. I'm pretty sure my mother slept through it, though.

Thanks, Dad!
