Young MacIsaac

Suddenly Isaac can say the names and/or noises of a lot of animals -- perhaps we should credit our frequent singing of "Old MacDonald" (or, more accurately, "Young MacIsaac"). For a long time all he could say was dog, although he could also whinny like a horse.

Just today he said duck for the first time. Yesterday he added pig and "maa" (that's what the goat says) to his stable. And at the start of the weekend he still said "mee-ow" for cat, but sometime on Saturday he began saying tuh, and by Sunday he had filled out the word to a quite serviceable kit-tuh.

Last week as we sat in our living room we heard an owl hooting outside, and without prompting Isaac said, "Ow!" For some reason this impressed me. I'm not usually one of those oh he has long fingers so he'll be a pianist parents, but I had a pleasing vision of him as a field ornithologist, hiking through the California wilderness on the trail of some rare quail. Maybe I like this idea so much because his dad is a scientist, or maybe I have a bias against blue-collar work -- I admit I am not thrilled when others say oh he likes trucks so he'll be a truck driver.

Here's a list of the animals and/or their noises:

Key = animal name (Isaac's pronunciation) -- noise made
Note: if no parenthetical pronunciation is given, he doesn't say the animal's name yet, just the noise it makes; in other cases he says the name but not the noise. What does a turtle say, anyway?
  • alligator (aah)
  • cat (kit-tuh) -- me-ow
  • cow -- mmmm
  • dog (dah) -- puts out tongue and makes panting noise
  • duck (duh)
  • goat -- maa
  • horse -- makes whinnying noise
  • owl (ow) -- who
  • pig (peh)
  • sheep -- baa
  • turtle (tuh-tuh)
