Babble vs. jabber

Shortly after I announced Isaac's first word he ceased speaking. The random babbling continued, but nothing that I could with confidence declare to be a word.

And last Saturday he began to jabber. He sounds like he's actually speaking -- complete sentences with inflection and hand gestures -- but it's gibberish. (It could be Punjabi, but I know from reading this very interesting book about child language acquisition that it must in fact be English-based gibberish.)

He talks as he plays by himself, as he rides in the car, and in the highchair. The other day it looked like he was pretending that two pieces of broccoli -- one in each hand -- were having an earnest discussion.
