Pre-walker, my foot

You may have read here that Isaac took four steps in a row, and then five steps later that day. That was nearly two weeks ago, during which time he only did it again once.

Before today, that is, when he suddenly began walking. Isaac and I were in a children's shoe store, and I had just described him to the salesclerk as a "pre-walker" when he turned and walked away from us. The salesclerk and I watched him go. I didn't even count the individual steps, since they weren't the impressive part -- it was how he smoothly combined them to really walk that blew my mind. Then he paused, stood steadily, pivoted, and took a few more steps in an entirely different direction.

"He looks like he's doing a pretty good job to me," the clerk said.

I talked to Craig on the phone, sounding a little like a conspiracy theorist. "Guess who knows how to walk?" I asked. "And here I've been telling people he doesn't know how. Why would he pick a shoe store as a good place to start? He wasn't even walking toward anything. Do you think he's known how for a while, and he's been keeping it a secret from us?"

Craig was more charitable. "Maybe he only just then figured it out."

Anyway, Isaac tried walking a few more times while we were still out shopping, although never quite as successfully. But he hasn't tried it at all since we returned home -- not even one step. Why would that be?
