Isaac hasn't been eating as much lately. This shouldn't have been a surprise, as the pediatrician had warned us to expect a decrease in weight gain during the second year, with a corresponding decrease in caloric need, but I didn't expect the change in appetite to correspond so closely with his first birthday. This morning he simply didn't seem hungry, and refused to eat a breakfast he has enjoyed many times in the past (plain yogurt mixed with bananas, applesauce, and oat cereal). More to the point, he even rejected plain banana after a bite or two -- and that's a first.
Not only is he eating smaller portions, he's starting to be choosier about what he wants to eat. This shouldn't have been a surprise either -- I understand this comes with his increasing independence, as he's realizing he has choices in this world. It's still somewhat irritating! The first previously acceptable foods to be rejected are green vegetables. He used to like peas and asparagus, for instance, but over the last three days he won't tolerate them even being in his presence -- if he sees them on the high chair tray, they must immediately go on the floor. But broccoli was always his favorite green vegetable, and he liked it as recently as four days ago, so I have my hopes that it hasn't disappeared from his list of acceptable foods. We'll see.
Either way, it's probably time to stop serving him plain steamed vegetables -- I guess we could add butter and salt to them, at least, and maybe even some melted cheese. Goodness knows I don't like my vegetables plain, either -- I prefer them with olive oil and garlic.
Edited to add:
At lunch today he snubbed that old favorite, cubed sweet potato! Even after I added butter and salt! I can hardly believe it!
