We're back at home now, but we went to my parents' house for Thanksgiving. While we were in the car making the two-hour drive, we heard two familiar childhood car cliches coming from Isaac:
"This is taking much longer than I thought."
He said this on Wednesday afternoon while we were driving down to my parents -- unfortunately we were less than five minutes away from our house! We weren't even on the freeway yet. He never actually said "Are we there yet?" but he went on to ask "Are we close? Are we very close now?" with great frequency throughout the trip. Since he doesn't have much sense of (1) the passage of time or (2) distance, it was hard to counter this question with numerical answers.
"I need to pee!"
He said this tonight while we were driving back home. We've had lots of experience taking him to the restroom in public places, but this is the first time we've had to actually stop the car to find one. In fact, at first I thought we'd have to pull over to the side of the road and stick a diaper on him. (I don't usually carry diapers, but since we were returning from an overnight trip we had a few with us.) We were in a deserted area with nothing but closed-up business parks, but then at the very last moment we happened upon a gas station. So it was also Isaac's first visit to a service station bathroom, another childhood rite of passage.
