Opa and Oma

It's a lucky little girl indeed who has two grandparents to hold her hands while she sleeps.

My parents went home today. They both came up last week -- exactly at this hour last Wednesday, in fact -- to be here for Laurel's birth. My dad stayed a few days, but my mom has been here the whole time. Man, are we going to miss them. Come back soon! I'm not kidding!

Craig and I are both sorry to see them go. It's not just the work they do while they're here, although who would mind having their meals prepared, their laundry washed, or their groceries purchased? Not to mention their apple trees pruned, their bathroom floor scrubbed, or their Christmas tree taken down? Having them do all those things was a wonderful bonus, especially as I would have been grateful just to have someone hold the baby while I napped -- which they did often and admirably, as you can tell from this picture. They are darn good baby-holders!

But mainly it's just a pleasure to have my parents around. Their affection and enthusiasm for their grandchildren -- and for their children -- is an inspirational reminder of why we become parents in the first place. And their calm and confident support is welcome, too. Thanks again, folks.
