Celebrating Independence Day

First time eating a hot dog

First time eating a hot dog bun (which he liked even better than the hot dog)

First time seeing a sparkler

First time opening the baby gate by himself

This is a little more independence than I'd like a 22-month-old to have. After it happened the first time, Craig asked Isaac how he had opened the gate, and he said, "Jumping, jumping!"

It's one of those "hands-free" gates, with a foot pedal that releases the latch so the gate itself can swing freely in either direction. Isaac puts both feet on the pedal and bounces on it repeatedly until he happens to apply enough force. In the meantime he pulls the gate toward himself, so when the latch is finally disengaged the gate swings open. He has to put both feet on top of each other to give the gate enough room to swing inward, which is a tricky bit of balancing, but eventually he'll figure out that he could also push the gate away from himself.

There's only one way to stop him from doing it -- get the video camera. For some reason he seems incapable of opening the gate whenever the camera is pointed in his direction.
