The incredible shrinking baby

I've mentioned that as Isaac grows, his proportions have changed. He has remained consistent in height (above the 90th percentile for the past ten months) although he has gradually decreased in weight (now down to the 35th percentile). This creates the optical illusion of him shrinking.

Not really, of course. But as he gets lankier, it's hard not to think of him as getting skinnier, too. This impression was reinforced by a recent wardrobe discovery -- he can wear his shorts from last summer. He's 20 months old as of yesterday, and last summer he was wearing size 6-12 months. Perhaps the shorts are a little, well, shorter than they were last year, but the waistbands fit just fine.

Isaac has a pair of pants he's been wearing since last summer, too. They're like magic pants, the pants that he never outgrows. For his first birthday in early September my brother's girlfriend sent him a cute pair of size 12 month jeans. At first we had to cuff them -- not only was the waistband a little loose so the pants hung low, but the pants were cut in the adult style where the hemline drags on the ground. As time passed, however, Isaac's waist grew bigger and his legs grew longer, and the jeans fit very well.

Around January it seemed we would soon be coming to the end of the pants -- they were beginning to look a little short. But then we had a reversal. Isaac's waist began to grow smaller, and once again the pants began to hang low, which corrected the length problem. (Only recently have they gotten too short again -- the waist still fits him fine, but there's no escaping the growth of his legs.)

This is happening with most of his pants, not just the magic ones -- where once the pants fit in the waist, now they're too loose. The good news is that it'll save me the time and expense of shopping! But I guess Isaac must be losing his baby pot-belly. Luckily he still has his soft baby thighs.
