Well, Melanie was right, and I do seem to have jinxed myself by theorizing that two nights of solid sleep might be a trend. Isaac's subsequent two nights were very short, both just over eight hours, and had other failings too dreary to recount. I won't make the same mistake this time -- not that I am overeager to declare two nights of poor sleep a trend! I prefer to engage in positive self-deception.
Yesterday morning Isaac was still tired when he woke up, which was understandable after having slept for just eight hours and 12 minutes, and he kept yawning as he was eating his breakfast. Putting together his thumb and forefinger into a little beak shape, he tapped on the tray of his highchair and said, "Peck peck, peck peck." (This can represent either a woodpecker or a bird emerging from the egg.) Then he slumped to one side exhaustedly and said, "Baby bird tired."
"I bet it's hard work pecking your way out of the egg," I said.
Then, still leaning over in his seat, he said, "Mailman tired."
"I bet it's hard work delivering all that mail," I said. Then I asked, "Is Isaac tired?"
"Yeah," he said.
