Check-up round-up

In honor of being two years old, Isaac had a doctor's appointment today!

  • He hasn't been to the doctor since his 18 months old appointment back in March. In those six months, Isaac has grown one and three-quarter inches and gained nearly three pounds, which the doctor said was a lot. (In comparison, in the previous six months he grew one and one-quarter inches but only gained half a pound.)
  • His height is 36 inches, which puts him in the 95th percentile (up from 93% last time). His weight is 27 pounds, one ounce, which puts him in the 40th percentile (up from 35% last time). The doctor told us that some people claim that doubling a child's height at the age of two gives their rough height as an adult. That's not surprising, considering that Craig is 5' 11" and I'm 5' 7".
  • "Want go home," Isaac said when the doctor entered the examination room. "Put on clothes. Open that door." So when the doctor was going down the developmental checklist, he didn't even have to ask about language development. Instead he said, "I hear Isaac's speaking in phrases."
  • Isaac didn't cry during his physical examination this time, mostly because the doctor let him play with the rubber mallet used for checking reflexes. Isaac was fascinated, and kept saying, "Funny little hammer!" as he tapped various parts of his own body. We were happy, but not surprised, to learn that everything was fine. (I requested a lab slip to get Isaac's blood drawn to test for lead, but I'm not really worried about it.)
  • One surprise the physical exam did reveal -- Isaac has gotten one of his two-year-old molars already, and the others are on their way! We hadn't even noticed. That might explain the trouble he has had falling asleep over the last few nights.
  • He also got two immunizations (Hepatitis A and influenza, both thimerosal-free), but although he cried when they were administered, he stopped crying almost immediately. He was interested in the Band-Aids, for one, but he was also eager to get to the treasure chest and pick out a toy. (Earlier he had informed the doctor, "Want pick out toy. Want tow truck! Or flatbed truck.") Unfortunately there were no vehicles at all, but he didn't seem upset, and he chose to walk away empty-handed. I thought that was pretty mature of him.
