Mamas, mamas, everywhere

Today, thanks to the watchful ear of the baby monitor, I found out what was on Isaac's mind. As he woke from his nap and returned to consciousness -- before he made any other noise, even before he lifted his head or sat up -- he said, "Mama!" Judging by his tone of voice -- a pleased declarative -- he was happy to wake up and remember Mama exists.

As you might guess, he's going through a "mama" phase right now. Although he is happy to hang out with his dad or his uncle during the day, when he awakens at night he wants no one but me. Craig has stopped even trying to sooth Izzy back to sleep, since his angry cries of "Mama! Mama!" make his desires perfectly clear.

Maybe this mama obsession explains why, when Isaac saw this cover of Life & Style magazine, he pointed at the small photo of Angelina Jolie and announced, "Mama!" There are five women on the cover of the magazine, but he singled out Angelina -- on two separate occasions today. If he's that consistent, I must in fact be Angelina Jolie. (Although yesterday he saw a picture of Kate Hudson and called her "Mama," in the photo she was pushing her son in the same stroller we use, so that must have confused the issue.)

No, while I do have good self-esteem, I have to say I'm no Angelina Jolie. (I am prettier than Kate Hudson, though.)

Anyway, I was feeling pretty good about myself for a while there. Then when I was reading a New York Times article online that was accompanied by this photo of Joan Rivers, Isaac pointed at the screen and proclaimed, "Mama!" Ouch. That's what I get for my hubris.
